UMass Dartmouth, College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA)

This location at 11-13 Humphreys Street in the Uphams Corner neighborhood of Dorchester housed over 50 artists and creative small businesses since its beginning in 2002.

The problem: After its two founders passed away, the HSS owners group decided to sell. The artists were not able to purchase the property on their own.

The advocacy: Over a 3+ year preservation journey and campaign and unprecedented financial investment from the City of Boston, Humphreys Street Studios, in partnership with New Atlantic Development, is now majority artist-owned/operated as affordable artist workspaces in perpetuity. Through doing this work, the artists and advocates decided to share what they learned to help others at risk of displacement and formed the #ARTSTAYSHERE Coalition.
